PF and ESI Registration: what you should know

Who must register

Employees' Provident Fund registration generally applies to establishments with 20 or more employees, with voluntary registration allowed for smaller ones. ESI applies to establishments with 10 or more employees in notified areas, covering employees up to a wage ceiling. Check current thresholds, as they change.

What you need

Establishment proof such as the certificate of incorporation or GST registration, PAN, bank account details, a list of employees with Aadhaar, UAN and wages, and a Digital Signature Certificate for EPF. Employees' details need to be correct from the start because errors cause claim problems later.

After registration

Contribute monthly on the due dates, issue UANs to employees, and file monthly returns. Employees gain a social security safety net, and you avoid damages and interest.

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Registering late after crossing the threshold
  • Incorrect wage data
  • Missing Aadhaar-seeded UAN for new hires
