What is Zoho accounting?

Zoho accounting in India explained
How Zoho's accounting apps fit together
The centre is Zoho Books, which holds the ledgers, invoices, bills, banking and reports. Other Zoho apps feed it, so a business can add them as it grows instead of buying everything on day one.
- Zoho Books: general ledger, sales, purchases, banking, GST and reports
- Zoho Expense: employee claims and receipts feeding the books
- Zoho Payroll: salary processing for eligible businesses, with entries posted to the ledger
- Zoho Billing: recurring invoices and subscriptions
- Zoho Inventory: stock, warehouses and order flow for product businesses
- Zoho Analytics: deeper dashboards over the same data
Check the current feature list for each app before you plan, because Zoho updates its products often.
Indian requirements and where Zoho handles them
The table further down maps the common Indian needs to the relevant area of the product. The broad picture is that GST, e-invoicing, e-way bills, TDS and rupee reporting are supported, while judgement about treatment still belongs to a person.
That last point deserves emphasis. Software applies rules you configure. If a supply is wrongly classified at set-up, every invoice repeats the error faithfully.
Who benefits most
- Service businesses and consultancies that want clean invoicing, bank matching and receivable follow-up
- Trading businesses that need GST-ready sales and purchase flows without heavy customisation
- Startups that want investor-ready reports and role-based access from the first year
- Multi-branch businesses that need one view across registrations
- Owners who want to see numbers from a phone without waiting for the accountant
Businesses with deep manufacturing logic, complex job work or heavy statutory reporting may need to look at the Zoho ERP suite or a specialist product. Our Zoho ERP partner guide covers that decision.
Honest limits
No accounting tool suits everyone. Plan around these realities.
- Migration from a long-standing system takes effort, and old data quality decides how smooth it is
- Custom statutory formats or unusual industry reports may need extensions
- Your team needs training; the first month is slower than the system you replace
- Automation does not replace review. A mismatch in GST data still needs a human to decide what is right
A 90-day adoption plan
- Days 1 to 15: confirm scope, clean masters (customers, suppliers, items), design the chart of accounts.
- Days 16 to 30: configure taxes, import opening balances, connect banks, train core users.
- Days 31 to 60: run live transactions, reconcile weekly and compare returns with the old method.
- Days 61 to 90: close a full month, lock it, review reports with your CA and retire the old process.

Indian accounting needs mapped to Zoho

| Indian requirement | Where it lives in Zoho accounting | Who checks it |
|---|---|---|
| GST invoices with correct place of supply | Zoho Books tax settings and invoice templates | Your CA at set-up |
| E-invoicing and e-way bills | Zoho Books, where your turnover or business needs them | Your CA and the partner |
| GSTR-2B matching of purchases | Zoho Books reconciliation features | Accounts team monthly |
| TDS and TCS | Tax settings and transaction-level sections | Your CA at return time |
| Employee claims | Zoho Expense | Finance lead |
| Payroll postings | Zoho Payroll to Zoho Books | HR and your CA |
| Management reports | Reports and Zoho Analytics | Owner or finance head |
The cost question
Think of three separate costs: the subscription for the apps you use, a one-time implementation and migration effort, and ongoing accounting and compliance work. Comparing only the subscription with an older desktop licence misses the other two.

- 5
Start small
Go live with Books first and add other apps later.
FAQ
Questions about Zoho Accounting in India
Is Zoho accounting suitable for Indian businesses?
Yes, many Indian businesses use it for GST invoicing, TDS tracking and banking. Fit depends on your industry, volumes and reporting needs, so test with real data.
Does Zoho accounting file my GST returns?
It prepares data and supports return workflows, but filing remains your responsibility. Your Chartered Accountant should review figures before anything is filed.
Can I move from Tally to Zoho?
Yes. Data can be brought across, but the quality of the result depends on how clean the Tally data is. Agree the cut-off date and reconcile opening balances.
Is my data stored in India?
Zoho operates regional data centres, including one in India. Ask which data centre your organisation uses when you sign up, and confirm it.
Is Zoho accounting cheaper than traditional software?
It can be, but compare total cost: subscription, implementation and training. Cheaper licences do not help if clean-up takes months.
Which Zoho apps do I need besides Books?
Start with Books. Add Expense, Payroll, Billing or Inventory only when a real process needs them.
Do I need an accountant if I use Zoho?
Yes for filings, tax planning, audit and judgement calls. Software organises the data; a Chartered Accountant stands behind it.
How long does adoption take?
Plan about three months to run comfortably, even if configuration is quicker. The final month is when you trust the reports.
